🕷️ Along Came a Spider

I picked up Along Came a Spider, the first book in James Pattersons Alex Cross series, partly out of curiosity and partly because our youngest now calls Washington, D.C., home. There’s something about that vibrant, layered city, alive with history, power, culture, and contradictions that always draws me in. Anytime I come across a story set there, it goes to the top of my list, and I’m so glad this one did.

From start to finish, this book is an absolute ride: a gripping blend of family drama, psychological tension, and a chilling mystery that had me glued to my headphones. One aspect that immediately stood out, and truly elevated the experience, was Alex Cross himself. Having a Black male lead at the center of such an intelligent, emotionally complex thriller added depth and resonance that felt both refreshing and powerful.

The audiobook narration by Taye Diggs—yes, the Taye Diggs from The Best Man and All American—brings Patterson’s gritty prose to life. His voice gives Alex Cross a grounded, soulful strength, making the story even more immersive.

Patterson’s writing here feels raw and authentic, striking just the right balance between intellect and emotion. He pulls you deep into Cross’s world, his family life, his work as both detective and psychologist, and his complicated sense of duty. The D.C. setting adds another layer entirely: a city where power, politics, ambition, and danger constantly intersect. Even though Along Came a Spider debuted in the early ’90s and was later adapted into a film, it hasn’t lost its punch. The story still feels alive, relevant, and relentlessly gripping. After finishing the book, Hubs and I dove straight into the Cross series on Amazon Prime, and it also delivered.

Trip Summary: A classic thriller that still bites. Along Came a Spider is a masterclass in pacing and suspense, five passport stamps ⭐ 5️⃣.
