Who can resist a good British mystery, especially one served with charm, wit, and a perfectly timed dry remark? The Thursday Murder Club checked every box for me and then brewed an extra pot of joy on top of it. Set in a quiet retirement village in Kent, this story follows four residents who spend their Thursdays solving cold cases… until one turns hot.
Richard Osman creates characters so richly drawn I could practically hear them as I read, my inner narration slipping into a gentle London lilt on its own. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim feel like old friends: curious, sharp, and full of deliciously unexpected layers.
When news broke that the book was being adapted into a movie, I was super excited. I haven’t seen it yet, but with that stellar cast, I’m fully prepared to be entertained all over again. If the film captures even half the heart and humor of the book, we’re in for an absolute treat.
What I loved most was how Osman blends humor with heart. For all the quips and tea-soaked banter, there’s real reflection here, on aging, friendship, purpose, and the comfort of people who get you. The mystery itself is satisfyingly tangled, but it’s the relationships that linger long after the final reveal.
My takeaway line came from Joyce: “Nothing like a good murder to keep the mind sharp, dear.” And this one kept me delightfully busy.
Trip Summary: A warm, witty, and wonderfully layered cozy mystery that charms as much as it intrigues, earning a well-traveled four passport stamps ⭐ 4️⃣.
